        Hackathon

From concept to prototype: shaping the future of biomedical innovation

⚲ At Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University, College of Engineering

      • The National Biomedical Engineering Summit Hackathon is a key initiative designed to support the summit’s overarching theme of localizing biotechnology in Saudi Arabia. As part of the national vision to build a self-sustaining biotech ecosystem, the hackathon will serve as a powerful platform to connect brilliant minds with industry leaders and real-life challenges. By doing so, we aim to accelerate the development of innovative, locally tailored solutions that address critical needs in the medical device field.

This hackathon is more than competition—itis an opportunity to bridge the gap between academia, innovation, and industry. By fostering collaboration between talented engineers and industry, the hackathon will contribute directly to achieving the goal of localizing biotechnology, helping to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position as a global leader in biomedical innovation.

Below is the complete description of the hackathon, including hackathon overview, team selection criteria, how to apply, judging rubric, and the project assignment method. The companies’ proposed problem statements will be provided later.

      • Hackathon Overview

        • Number of Problems: 3 real-life challenges, each provided by a leading medical devices company.
        • Team Grouping: For each problem, 10 teams will be assigned to compete directly against one another. Only one winning team will be selected per problem.
        • Prototype Requirement: Each team will develop a prototype (physical or software-based) to demonstrate their solution.
        • Presentation: Teams will present their solution and prototype to a judging committee composed of representatives from the medical device companies.

        Phases

        Note:
Participants living outside Dammam are expected to cover their travel expenses if selected to participate in the final phase, which requires physical attendance on the day of the summit. Failure to confirm attendance will result in termination of the competition.

        Team Selection Criteria

Given the competitive nature of this hackathon, we anticipate hundreds of strong applications. While every team brings a unique value, we will use the following criteria to fairly select those whose ideas and approaches best align with the goals of this event:

        How to Apply

Applying for the National Biomedical Engineering Summit Hackathon is straightforward. We welcome teams of 4-5 members, with diverse skills and a passion for solving real-life biomedical challenges. Here’s how your team can apply:

        1. Team Registration:

        • Form a team of students or fresh graduates. Ensure your team includes a variety of skills (e.g., engineering, software development, design) and at least one member with a biomedical or clinical background.
        • Each team should assign a team leader who will serve as the main point of contact.

        2. Submit Your Application:

        • Each team leader has to submit the application form through the website.

        3. Application Deadline:

        • Ensure that the application form is submitted by 30 July 2025. Late applications will not be considered.

        4. Selection Process:

        • After the submission deadline, the hackathon committee will review all applications based on the Team Selection Criteria mentioned above.
        • Teams accepted into the hackathon will be notified by early August 2025.
        • Teams selected to advance to Phase 2 will receive email notification no later than one week before the summit.
        • Teams that are not selected will receive feedback and will be encouraged to participate in future events.

        Timeline

        Note:

The final presentation will be conducted on September 11, 2025 during the summit.
